Better Late Than Never

I work nights, so I figure it still counts as a day, as long as that day is still somewhere in the United States. So thank you Hawaii, you'll do wonders for my guilt.

I saw a bunch of photo challenges this morning. It seems like a good way to make a post a day stick. I chose one at semi-random. By semi, I mean I threw out the first few because they were too "professional" targeted. The one I ended up with has (naturally) a different photo every day. Simple, and yet complex; each could be taken literal, or not.

It's too late for day one, which was "You." There are pictures of me enough about, and the last one of the month is "You, again" so there's where I can get in one. As a rule, I'm not in photos much. Not that I'm camera shy, but my photos are of my point of view. And I don't see myself in my photos. I have no problem being in photos by others though. Because I am in their memories & images, if you get my drift.

Anyway, today's challenge was "Breakfast." As it happens,II took a picture (as you can see) of breakfast today. It was at a Bickford's. It was good, though not quite great. The reason why I ate there? That's another tale for another time. Perhaps.

Granola Bars: A Controlled Substance?

So I was on my way in to work tonight, when I decided to grab some granola bars to snack on before got there. We have a soda machine handy, no snacks. I'm sorta looking at my weight, so I'm staying away from the junkiest of snacks anyway. Granola bars fit the bill. Not too many calories, no high fructose corn syrup, and they have some nutritional merit.

So I stop at the CVS in Central Square in Cambridge, MA. Work is a block (or two, depending on your math & map) from the square. I find where they stock the Quaker Chewy Variety Pack & grab a box. I bring it up to the front where the self checkout machines are located.

Which is where & when the fun started.

The computer refuses to sell me the box. It scans fine, but then tells me "You can not make this purchase at this time." Repeatedly. So I summon the attendant.

He comes over, sees the problem, and tries to override the computer. The computer, however, is smarter than he is, ad he can't figure out how to allow the sale. So after a few tries he asks me to go to the counter, and he'll have someone ring me up there. So over I go.

I wait a few minutes, and up comes the cashier. He yells at the attendant because he had to come from the back for one item, then goes to ring me up.

Only the computer was smarter than him, too. He couldn't figure out how to tell the register it was OK to sell me a box of granola bars. After five minutes of him trying to outsmart a machine, he gave up.

And told me he wasn't allowed to sell the box after 10pm.

When I finished laughing at him, I asked him to confirm that. Nope, it's too late for him to sell me the box. I stared at him a bit, then walked out.

On the other side of Mass Ave is a Walgreens. I walked over there - mid-block - and went straight to where they had the granola bars. Grabbed a box. Went to the register. *Bleep* Sale went right through. Gave them my money, took my granola bars to work. Finally.

I find myself wondering how many other things CVS can't sell after 10pm, considering it's open 24 hours.

Jokes I Tell: Learning to Curse

I may make this a weekly thing. We shall see.

Early one Saturday morning, two young boys - Jason, 7 & Harry, 5 - were talking. Jason was telling his younger brother about the curse words he had heard at school the previous day. Neither boy was sure what the two words meant, but knew that they would have to use them to be considered Big Boys.

"Boys, come down for breakfast!" their mother called. The two boys looked at each other and swiftly swore a pact. Jason would use the word "fuck" at breakfast, and Harry would use the word "ass" thereafter. Then they would be Big Boys.

The two lads scurried down to the kitchen where their mother had assembled eggs, bacon & toast, even warming up the waffle iron. The two boys took their traditional seats at the table. Mom smiled at her two young men and asked "what would you guys like for breakfast today? Your choice!"

Harry looked at Jason, and Jason looked back. Then Jason turned to his mother and said "well, fuck, I would like Cheerios for breakfast."

Without missing a beat, mom backhanded Jason so he flew out of the chair to the floor. More shocked than truly hurt, he popped up to his feet and saw anger and pain in his mother's eyes. Jason burst into tears and ran from the kitchen, not stopping until his was buried under he covers of his bed.

Mom slowly turned to Harry, who was wide-eyed and shaking in his chair. With ice in her voice, she asked her youngest son "and what do YOU want for breakfast?"

Harry, no fool he, promptly decided he understood he was being tested, to see if he had learned a lesson here. And he had. Trembling, Harry replied "you can bet your ass it's not Cheerios!"

There's a movie theatre a softball's throw away from the complex I currently work in. Thanks to the MBTA Commuter Rail, however, there's no direct route there. For someone here to see a film there, they would have to walk up to almost a mile. My first inclination is that they're missing a lot of business not having an overpass; my second is that most of the residents here only speak English as a second language, and some not at all, so they may not even know what they're mising. Which might be the greater shame.

Stoughton War Veterans Memorial

Monday was Memorial Day here in the United States of America. Stoughton, like every other city & town in our Commonwealth, has had those that put on a uniform and served their country and lost their lives doing it. Pictured is the town memorial to honor those people.

Several members of my family (both immediate and extended) have served, and only one came back injured, so i consider myself lucky. Serving has been in my family a long time. But that's another stoy, for another time.

Can You Help My Autistic 8 Year Old Nephew?

As some of you are aware, I have a large contingent of siblings. One of my sisters has a son, Tyler. Tyler is autistic.

Tyler is a currently a Boy Scout, based in West Philadelphia. My father helps the troop so Tyler can be part of everything. As part of their 100th year celebration, the Boy Scouts are doing a lot of "100" themed projects.

My nephew is trying to come up with 100 different train or bus schedules, from as many different places as he can. I would like to help him achieve his goal, and I'm asking for your help.

I know many of you who will read this are from all over the world. Boston & Philadelphia, for certain. Probably parts of Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maine, New York, Tennessee, Missouri, Georgia & Florida, among other states. Maybe even England, Ireland, & New Zealand, or other nations. All I would ask is that you grab a local public transportation schedule, stick it in an envelope, and mail it to him. For the cost of a stamp & a few minutes time, you can help me make an little boy quite happy. Which would make me happy enough to cry, something I know some of you want to see (or hear about).

Gilded Latten Bones: A Garrett, P.I., Novel by Glen Cook

Garrett is back. Mostly. Some new, but not unwelcome directions. He's beginning to come across as something I'm not sure he needed to become, but perhaps necessary for future stories to develop. All the usual ingredients are here, yet the flavor was a bit off.

Worst movie ever was Dungeons & Dragons (2000). Saw it with my brother. When we got there (late show) they had closed the box office early, so we saw it for free. Yet we *still* wanted money back it was soooo bad.

Futures at Fenway

On Saturday July 10th I went to Fenway Park to witness "Futures At
Fenway", which was supposed to be two minor league games held there.
For some of the players, it might be their only chance to play there.
As it happens, I didn't get to see two games. What I did see was fun
though.

First, there were a lot of families and many, many kids at the park.
With tickets going cheap for this event (I paid $20 for 3rd base field
box seats!) this was affordable to many moms or dads to take the kids
who would never get to see a Red Sox game at Fenway Park, due to high
ticket prices. I stayed out on Yawkey Way until nearly game time
because I was able to witness - several times - the look of shock,
awe, joy & adoration on several younglings who had never been in sight
of Fenway Park before in their lives.

Entering the park it was more of the same. Kids, who had never been
inside those walls before, walking as slow as they could while their
eyes darted about, trying to take in everything about them & fearing
they were missing something.

Hard to believe I was once as astonished & amazed walking into a ballpark.

The first game was Lowell hosting Jamestown. Jamestown got off to a
quick start and took an early lead. They kept trying to come back, but
the rains came and washed the game out. The rains lightened up
eventually, but not before field conditions had deteriorated so badly
that the second game, Salem hosting Potomac, was cancelled.

Besides the looks on the children's faces, the next amazing thing was
a 'promotion' held between innings. A young lady was called down from
the crowd and was asked a trivia question for a choice of unknown
surprises. The question was placed on the giant scoreboard in center -
who was on the mound for the fiinal out when the Red Sox won the 2007
World Series? She answered correctly. Then she was asked to choose
Prize A or Prize B. When she made her choice, the scoreboard read
"WILL YOU MARRY ME?" She whipped around and found her boyfriend, a
player, in full uniform (he'd been playing) kneeling behind her with a
box in his hand. Trembling, she opened it and found a ring. She
embraced him then, to the cheers of the crowd. When she returned to
her seat from the field, both sections on either side of the aisle she
used gave her a standing ovation.

So even with the disappointment caused by the rain, it was still a
great time. I plan to make it an annual event, and to attend the Cape
Cod League All-Star Game 7/28. With admission of $10 to see a game at
Fenway, who knows how many new memories will be created that night?

My #Bruins Playoff Beard

I was reminded that I've mentioned my growing a Bruins Playoff Beard, but that it hasn't really been seen. So I've decided to correct that.

The goatee part is *usually* on my chin, so that's nothing new. It's the fuzz on the cheeks and under the chin that are new. Yeah, there's plenty of grey in the facial hair. My family, in particular my generation, has a history of premature graying. I'm just not full of myself enough to color it. Though I have colored it in the past, when I've colored my hair. In my younger and more wild days. I have not always had Bruins Playoff Beards for a few reasons. 1st, when I was old enough to discover sports I was living in Philadelphia. So my 1st hockey team were the Flyers. 2nd, my father always had a beard. So he never taught me about the tradition of growing a beard until your team was eliminated from the playoffs. Granted, I don't even know that it *was* a tradition back then either. Finally, this is the Bruins we're talking about. This once feared and legendary organization has not been a hot topic in Boston for some time. A win tonight will go a long way to keeping the people of Boston talking about them for some time.

Go Bruins!

And, of course, Go Red Sox!
